You would have been hard pressed to miss this week’s news. It’s the hot topic wherever you turn – the US elects Donald Trump for president. And the world is reeling with shock and disbelief.
I dare say many of us are still clinging to the hope that Ashton Kutcher will jump out at any moment and declare us all ‘Punk’d’, but it’s not looking good (Ashton, mate, it’s not funny anymore!).
While it is clear that not even the world’s leading experts saw this coming (and quite likely not even Trump himself), someone out there certainly did.
For those of you who have a strange feeling of déjà vu, it’s not your imagination. The Simpsons predicted this very outcome 16 years ago when they wrote an episode with Lisa, as the first female president, cleaning up the mess from outgoing President Trump.
Which begs the question: was this attempt at satire the unfortunate start of the ripple that planted the thought in his mind? Butterfly effect anyone? There is a reason why they say be careful what you put out in the universe, it just might come true!
My newsfeed and inbox has been flooded with stories and speculation of how this happened, why the experts didn’t see it coming and what it means for our future (with opinions ranging from “World War III” to far more optimistic outlooks).
So, what DOES it mean?
Honestly? No one knows. And that’s the real truth. Trump is definitely the wild card, with no one quite sure if his outrageous policy promises are for real or simply a matter of clever campaigning and attention seeking by making shocking statements. After all, they say there is no such thing as bad publicity…
One thing is for certain though, our diplomats and politicians will have their skills put to the test protecting Australia’s interests, while the rest of us tread lightly waiting to see what exactly Trump does (as opposed to what he says he will do), and to what extent he can be contained.
The reality is that the global economy is already facing severe challenges: interest rates are at record lows and even negative in some countries (yup, they pay you to borrow money!), the world is experiencing low growth and debt levels are quite high.
Trump or no Trump, it is going to take us a while to clean up this mess!
